Hand washing and home cleaning have never played such important roles in my lifetime. What used to feel like pretty basic stuff is now elevated to the front line of COVID-19 prevention.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have provided guidance for cleaning and disinfecting for COVID-19 prevention and I wanted to share some specifics on how to best use Whoa Nelli products in accordance with this guidance.
HAND AND BODY SOAP
You’ve heard it repeatedly. Washing your hands with soap and water is an important preventative measure. How is something as basic as soap so effective against the COVID-19 virus? Science writer Ferris Jabr provides a great explanation of how soap works to destroy viruses and bacteria, including COVID-19, in a recent New York Times article.
Our handmade soap works in the same way that commercial soaps work when it comes to destroying viruses and bacteria. Our soap also includes skin conditioning ingredients like shea butter that help prevent drying and chapping from frequent hand washing.
There’s a difference between cleaning and disinfecting, and the CDC’s guidance for COVID-19 prevention is to both clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily.
Cleaning refers to the removal of germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. Cleaning does not kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.
Disinfecting refers to using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.
Whoa Nelli products are for cleaning
We manufacture two soap-based surface cleaning products — the scour powder and the scrub cleaner. Both should be followed with disinfection with an EPA-registered disinfectant on frequently touched surfaces according to the guidelines for COVID-19 prevention.
Our all-purpose spray is a naturally acidic vinegar-based surface cleaner. Vinegar has been shown to kill some types of germs but it’s important to know that it is not an EPA-registered disinfectant and it should not be used in place of a disinfectant. As a cleaner the all-purpose spray is effective at removing dirt, grease and mineral build-up from surfaces. It's also a very effective cleaner for glass, mirrors and windows.
Soap is the cleaning agent in our laundry soap (I mention this because the words 'soap' and 'detergent' are frequently used interchangeably). The CDC COVID-19 prevention guidance recommends washing laundry at the warmest appropriate water setting and drying completely.
